The Truth Behind the Audit

Inquiring minds want to know…

WHY is the PTA being audited??

Every year, every PTA must complete an audit of the previous years’ books before the first general membership meeting. Sorry it is a pretty mundane excuse, but all true.

It has been difficult to find the brave and generous soulsĀ  necessary to complete the audit in advance. When we finally got the three volunteers we needed, it took a few days to coordinate schedules. The Treasurer and I underestimated the amount of time necessary to complete the necessary standardized audit paperwork. The team put in an hour and a half last night, and will hopefully finish this evening.

Personally, numbers make me itch. Having worked often with auditors in my professional life, I’m not a fan of the job (SOX anyone?). I’m in awe of the attention to detail necessary, and firmly believe in the reasons behind annual auditing. It makes me wonder why I don’t do the same thing with my family finances?

Thanks for your patience in postponing the first meeting. We hated to do it, but realize we have to remain flexible in an all-volunteer all-donation organization. We’re here to the best we can for our community, school, teachers and kids.

Sincerely,

Wendy (Mello) Newton

Tuesday, 8/23 Meetings Postponed

The audit of last year’s books is not complete. PTA rules say that a completed audit must be presented at the first general membership meeting of the new year for approval.

We will re-schedule the August meeting as soon as the audit is complete. The next regularly scheduled membership meeting is September 14.

Thank you for your patience, and stay tuned here for news and events!

Meeting Tuesday! (Cancelled)

Our first General Membership meeting of the year will be from 7-8PM on Tuesday, August 23! We’ll be just getting our feet under us with reports from treasury, membership, and fundraising. Join us for a preview of the 2011-12 school year!

See you at the school!
